Our first Garden to Table!

Take a look at some of the photos from our first lesson at Garden to Table this week. We had a great time learning about gardening tools and what is growing in our garden beds around the school.

In the kitchen, we made some delicious Indian themed food, which we ate together as a whole class to finish the lesson.

You can find the recipes for what we made at the G2T blog here:

End of Term 2 - Puriri Disco Day!

We have had a fantastic, BUSY! term 2 in Room Six. Thanks for keeping up with some of our activities and learning on our class blog.

We finished the term with the Puriri Disco - so many of us got dressed up and showed off our best dance moves.

Well done Zoe C (best dressed girl) and Emacyn (best girl dancer).

See you all in term 3!

Our Community Garden Harvest

One of the benefits of helping out in the Community Gardens - a huge harvest of Jerusalem artichokes to share together.

We simply washed, chopped, and roasted them in the oven. We added garlic, oil, and salt to make them extra delicious.

Lots of children took some home to share with their families after trying them in class.

Matariki 2017 - Planting Harakeke

Happy Matariki 2017 from Room Six. We had a great week making stars with our buddy class, reading myths and legends to explain the star cluster, and we planted a baby Harakeke flax beside Nga Ringa Awhina.

Some super keen children even woke up at 5am Friday morning and got a great view of the Matariki stars from the top of Mt Albert.

Mindful Eating

Who would have thought there was so much to eating an apple (mindfully).

With the help of our super parent Jane, and a picture book about eating mindfully, Room Six children each examined an apple from every possible angle before we finally got to eat them!

The best thing is, you can do this with any type of food. The enjoyment of your favourite meal can go on for much longer with this new skill!

Our very own Junior Tough Gal!

Congratulations Zoe M!

Zoe has been training for, and yesterday participated in, the Junior Tough Gal event in West Auckland. She went with a big group of children from Owairaka School.

It was a 3km run through some super muddy obstacles, including some mud slides, crawling under nets, and freezing water up to her neck!

I am sure lots of Room 6 wants to give it a go next year after seeing your efforts Zoe!

Caught Being Good - Tamati

Congratulations Tamati - you were our Caught Being Good winner this week. You have shown that you can be super confident, especially with new challenges, and you ALWAYS have excellent manners at school, which is our school focus right now!

Ka pai!

School Certificate - Saana

Saana was our certificate winner on Friday. Saana is a great thinker in maths time, but the reason she got the certificate if for her inclusive and collaborative approach to maths problem solving in her group. Excellent listening and sharing Saana, well done!

Room 6 - Community Gardens

We spent time in the Community Gardens at Owairaka Park today - helping our friend Heather. We had 3 jobs:

- we planted a new guava tree, and we harvested a big crop of Jerusalem Artichoke
- we weeded a couple of big garden beds
- we sketched drawings of insects from the bug hotel

Well done Room 6, a great way to show support for your local community!

Caught Being Good: Sahar

Sahar you are a superstar! Not only did you practice with enthusiasm during buddy class dancing lessons, you turned up to school so you could perform at Room 6's school assembly EVEN THOUGH you were sick!

What an inspiring effort.

Happy Green Day from Room Six

Well done Room 6 and Room 23 for the way you worked together to present an awesome Green Day Assembly... your teachers are super proud of every single one of you!

School Certificate - Emacyn and Joyce

Hidden under these masks are Emi and Joyce, our two senior chicken caretakers! Everyone in Room 6 has a turn caring for our school chooks, but these two are up at the coop EVERY day - feeding, watering, cleaning.

Thanks so much girls - we couldn't look after the Owairaka chooks without all the work you do.

Room 6's Walking Warrior!

BIG Congratulations to Zoe C - who recently completed 600 walks to/from school. She was recognised by Auckland Transport for her awesome efforts to being travel wise. We are sure that number will keep going up too!

Check out her super healthy green lunch too...

Caught Being Good: Cole

Cole, well done for your excellent effort and attitude at school this term. You have shown us this in class, and especially during our recent Cross Country training and on race day! Your face when you crossed the finish line showed that you gave it 100%. Nice one!

Making Kawakawa Tea with Mr Bennett

Room 6 spent time this week making kawa kawa tea with Mr Bennett. We harvested the kawa kawa leaves ourselves from Owairaka's Rongoa garden. It had a strong taste, so we added honey to make it a bit sweeter!

Head over to the Nga Ringa Awhina blog site to see some of the other learning that all children at Owairaka are taking part in.

Puriri Cross Country 2017

As you know, yesterday was the Puriri team Cross Country! I can honestly say that every single child in Room 6 who ran gave it everything they had. What an awesome team effort.

We talked before-hand about all the different goals we had for the Cross Country. Some of us wanted to win our age group, while some of us really wanted to get to the finish line.

EXTRA well done to these place-getters from our class:

- Leilani was FIRST place for 7 year old girls
- Alan was FIRST place for 7 year old boys
- Emacyn, Joyce, and Zoe M were FIRST, SECOND, THIRD for 8 year old girls
- Brandon was SECOND place for 8 year old boys

Well done Room 6, all of the Puriri teachers are proud of your efforts.

Table Tennis excitement

Puriri team has been very busy lately! During week 4, we had a NZ table tennis champion come and teach us some of the basic skills and rules for the game of table tennis.

We learnt how to hold the bat, how to hit the ball with different force, and how to serve and return a serve! WOW!

Mr Faulder is keen to see heaps of you at his lunchtime table tennis lessons.

Life Education Caravan!

Owairaka had a visit from the Life Education Caravan (and Harold!) last week. We learnt about the importance of being ourselves, and we spent time talking about what makes up our personality:

- the way we think
- the way we feel
- the way we act
- the things that we do
