ANZAC Day at Owairaka

Friday 24 April was a special day at Owairaka, and all through Australia and New Zealand. It was a chance for us to recognise, remember, and acknowledge the young men who fought in the First (and Second) World Wars. Because Australia and New Zealand are so close to each other, they stay friends so that they can help each other if they have to, particularly in times of war because the rest of the world is so far away. The world wars were fought to give us "freedom". To be free means that we can do things like go where we want to go, live where we want to live, own our own things, have good to eat, a job to earn money, and act as we want to act. In some countries people are not allowed to do these things. Room 6 was joined at the school flagpole by Rooms 7, 21, 23, and Mrs Polkinghorne. We listened to some poems, about poppies. Then Mrs P read the Ode, a special poem that is said at every ANZAC service. We placed crosses in the ground, and acknowledged the special Owairaka boys who fought in WW2. We ended by listening to "The Last Post", to remind us of the many soldiers killed or hurt during the war. Here is a link to the tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Pz5KsyfN0 We will never forget the brave, young New Zealanders and Australians that fought for our freedom.

We are learning to...

Write an information report. Following from our look into ANZAC day, we are writing information reports in Room 6. We are going to publish them on our blog once they are finished. Here is a report writing game you can play on your computer...

Sumdog: Play at home... Get Double coins!!!

Bonus coins outside school hours Sumdog wants to encourage children to keep answering questions outside class. So from now on, we're giving double coins to children who play outside school hours. Children get the bonus coins for correct answers before 8:30am, or after 3:30pm - and all day at weekends. So even if your students don't have great IT access at home, they could still earn their bonus coins after school.
