Run, Jump, Throw with our mate Eric

Through term 4, room six has been using Monday afternoons to train for the Olympics. Obviously, 2016 Rio is a bit close but we are thinking long term. The awesome Eric from Kiwisport NZ has taught us a whole lot of athletics skills and tips, to help us run faster, and to help us jump further and higher.

Conservation Week in November - Room 6 Writing

Part of our follow up to Conservation Week was to do some writing about a special "green space". Room Six chose the rongoa garden at school, next to Nga Ringa Awhina (the helping hands). It is filled with native New Zealand plants, some of which are used by Room 23 when they make kawakawa cream.

It is a beautiful quiet space in the school, and it gave us motivation to do some awesome descriptive writing about the environment around us.

Term 4 certificate winners... well done Room 6!

WOW, what a super certificate assembly we had on Friday the 13th. Ms Whysall came armed with lots of yellow pieces of paper to deserving children from all over the school. Special congratulations to...

Farman, for his huge improvement in, and attitude to reading, which Mrs Kapisi says has been getting better all year.

Rawiri and Ketula got the class certificates. Well done Rawiri for your growing independence in learning, and well done Ketula for your helpful attitude all through 2015.

Loretta was recognised for using the Walking School Bus in 2015 over 150 times!

Rooms 6/8 Beach Trip – Mairangi Bay – 24/11/15

Dear Room 6 parents,

As you will know by now, next Tuesday 24th, Room 6 will be spending a day at Mairangi Bay to learn about the importance of surf and sun safety.

This is important life learning, especially for children in New Zealand heading into the summer season. We will be doing lots of in class learning and preparing in the week leading up to our visit.

Thanks for all the parents who can come along – we can’t go without you. I will text on Tuesday to confirm details. Thanks, Mr Lyons

Swimming in term four - by Ketula

We have thirty minutes inside the pool every day.
We got free time for twenty minutes, because it was our first day.
One activity Ms Green taught us is we have to run around the pool and make a current.
When we`ve made a current then we have to go the other way and try to run as fast as we can because the current is still going the other way and it is so so hard.

Room Six's Queen of the Green!

Hadia has only been at Owairaka (and in NZ) for a couple of months, but she is extremely active in our local environment. She helps out with school chickens, does lots of watering in the gardens, and went along to the Owairaka eco-neighbourhood tree planting to help out in the weekend! She also wore a beautiful green costume to recognise green day at school.

She has also memorised the school pepeha, (in English and Te Reo!) and was the first to put her hand up and volunteer to lead the whole school when we spoke the pepeha at Green Day Assembly on Friday. WOW!!!

Well done Hadia, you are awesome to have in Room 6, keep up your excellent efforts.

Super Green Day - Friday 6 November

Huge congratulations to:

- Loretta and Mazey, who spoke to the whole school about all the different jobs Room 6 has to care for our school chickens.

- Amy and Mala, who shared information with the whole school about the different jobs that honeybees have in a beehive.

- All of Room 6, who dressed in green, were active in the gardens, and participated in a "vegetable quiz" that took them to different parts of the school while trying to find answers to Ms Christison's clues!

Maths - fact families

You don't need to be a times table master to know how these families work. With three numbers, we have been practicing turning them into four facts (multiplication and division). We usually do a new one every day, and it helps us to memorise new facts and understand how the families work together.
Mindfulness, meditation, whatever you want to call it, Room 6 has been trying out techniques to help with breathing, posture, and relaxation. One of the things we have been doing is called "Big White Star" which is an activity to help us relax, connect with the community around us, and to be aware of our own bodies and movements. Here is a short clip from one day in term 3. Check back soon for some photos of our morning yoga with the lovely Ms Lindfield and the awesome children from Room 4 (Year 2)!!!

Zooming in... right in

Room Six has a brand new 3-dimensional microscope.

As well as that, thanks to the awesome Foram and some of her Year 13 tutorial students, we have 20+ slides to examine. We are going to be "displaying about two of these each week, as well as children being able to use the microscope in free time, and before school.

One of the slides is the mouth of a honey bee, which fits in perfectly with our learning topic this term.
Come by and have a look!

New look Room Six

You might have noticed some of the furniture changing around in Room Six. Children like to choose where they sit in the class, it depends on what activity they are doing, and who they are working with in a particular lesson.

Here you can see the awesome Alligator reading group working on some follow up questions to the story they have just read with Mr Lyons, "Too Many Possums", a story about the threat to native plants and animals that possums pose.

While over here, Claire, Rania, Salha, Lucas, and Oisin are all working independently at our new high bench with stools.

Welcome back to Term 4... special congratulations to these boys

James and Farman came back to school ready to learn in Term Four. As part of our maths problem solving lessons, these boys have become masters at finding words that help them decide if a question needs to be answered with addition, subtraction, or times tables. They have shown that they are able to work well in a group by sharing their ideas, or work independently to complete follow up questions. Great job boys, keep up your excellent effort.
