Learning at Home 4

News from Evie

ANZAC Day:

Keeping Fit:

Staying smart and doing art:
Homework book
Monopoly property tycoon
Building a name sculpture
Thinking about nurses and the ambulances who help with C-19
Practicing drums

Local missions:
Lots of walks, scoots and skates along the Waterview and Oakley Creek paths

And then today, a fall off the monkey bars... off for an xray tomorrow! We don’t think it’s broken as she can move it though. She is in a bit of pain, and you’d think she would be having a sulk, but instead she’s stoked to come home and show Madi her sling J

Hi Sam. I hope you are having a good time. Lockdown has been fun for me but it's annoying wearing my new slingy thingy because it hurts my thumb. I have been having fun doing obstacle courses and going for walks to see the waterfall. We've seen ducks lately when we go for walks and we fed them two times. Love Evie

Amelia Ellicott's Garden

Do you remember this story? We read it in term one. Amelia Ellicott has lived in the same house for many years, during which time the neighbourhood has changed dramatically. A crisis moves the situation from one where Amelia and her neighbours are seperate and lonely, to one where they work together, care for one another, and share their lives.

Your task: share this story with your family, and discuss these questions together:

 - Why didn't Amelia share her garden with her neighbours?
- Should neighbours share?
- Do you have to know someone to be a neighbour?
- What does it mean to be neighbourly?

Remember, no wrong answers, so long as you use the word "because".

Hello from McKenzye

Hello Sam and room 19

I hope you guys are doing good. I have been busy during lockdown making cupcakes, going for walks, helping my Mum bake, reading heaps, working out in our home gym, playing dress ups with our cats 🐱, we decorated our bedroom window for the teddy bear hunt. We had yummy Easter breakfast before we did a egg hunt. My clue was “I am hiding behind something that is alive and green” I found my eggs hiding behind our plants 🌱
I have also been working hard around the house and helping out heaps with chores to earn money to spend at our snack shop

I hope to see you all soon

News from Alex, Maddy, and Tyson

Dear Sam,

Today we made some corn fritters. We got the idea from Kai 5. First we got all of the ingredients and then we mixed it together. Next we put the food in the frying pan. Finally I cut the tomatoes, William cut the avocado and mum flipped the fritters. Then we ate it.  They tasted like pizza and i would like to make them again.

from Alex

Alex has also been doing writing with his auntie from England. One activity he did was turn the tale of the Three Blind Mice into a news report! Here it is:

Earlier today there was a serious incident. In nursery rhyme land three blind mice were following a farmer. They were brothers and they were all the same age. Their names were Marmite, Mickey and Moo moo. They all had ran after the farmer's wife who had some cheese. Then she cut off the tails with a carving knife. We'll bring you more on that story as we receive it.

Another writing activity Alex did was to describe a superhero and a villain. Here are his character descriptions:

Super hero
Super power: Being invisible
Hobbies: Playing the piano and playing football.
Likes: Cool and apple Juice and playing sport
Dislikes: Lettuce and going to the dentist.
Super fact: They turned invisible in the world
Name:

Villain
Super Power: Dodging attacks
Favourite Hideout: An underground cave
Hobbies: Making robots and escaping from jail
Dislikes: People telling jokes about him
Reward: 5,000+ a free packet of cookies

Maddy shared a video of her science experiment - making a volcano erupt!

Tyson has been cooking, renovating, playing, building forts and lots of games. He has also shared some amazing writing, and a video of an obstacle course that goes all the way around his house!

Lexia Core 5

Owairaka School has been fortunate enough to be given access to the excellent online reading resource, "LEXIA Core 5".

It is a targeted learning program, which helps children at the level of reading they are currently at, whether it be decoding sounds and words, or reading comprehension.

Please check your email for two documents - one with instructions, the other with login details.

The details basically come down to this:
- type the email address dcramer@owairaka.school.nz (one time)
- enter your username and password
- do a short test so Lexia can assess your level (parents please don't assist with this)
- get started

Sam can track progress and see how you are getting on, and can even print certificates for the levels you have completed!

Photos from Jack

Have a look at some of the things that Jack has been doing during the national lockdown - thanks for keeping in touch, Jack.

Hi Sam,

I am typing this email by myself.  In the holidays I have been making afghans. I have been playing hide and seek with my big brother. I have been walking up Mt Albert every day.  Did the Easter Bunny come and see you? He  came to see us.  My Dad put a chicken on  our fence for Easter. Tomorrow we will watch YOE.

From Jack

Hi Sam and Room 19,

I saw Joe and his dog walking up Mt Albert.  I have been watching Aotearoa history show.  We made some soup and our own bread rolls.  It was delicious.  I earned some pocket money.  Our friends made some Poppies for us.  They left some supplies in our letter box to make some more.  We put them on our fence with the New Zealand flag and stood outside at 6am on Anzac day.  Then we walked up Mt Albert, we got to watch the sun come up.  We also made some Anzac biscuits.  They were delicious.  I have been learning about volcanoes.  There are a lot of volcanoes in New Zealand.  There are some that are still active.  My Dad told me about Lake Taupo, it was made after a volcano erupted.  I ride my bike and scooter every day, except when it rains.  It is nearly my sister’s birthday.  She is turning three.  I am going to send you some photos.  I hope to see you all soon.  I like looking at the updates from others on our blog.  Bye for now.  From Jack.

Term 2 is almost here, and a message from Young Ocean Explorers

Hello Room 19 learners and families,

In anticipation of the official beginning of term two tomorrow (Wednesday 15th), I thought I would share one online resource you might like to explore over the next few days.

Remember the Young Ocean Explorers? The energetic Riley who visited us during term one, and her dad Steve, have decided to create a daily online series - "Live in the Lockdown" - where they share interviews with famous ocean people! There is even the chance for you to send in questions to be answered.

You can watch these broadcasts live every weekday at 12.30pm. Go to www.youngoceanexplorers.com or find them on Facebook if someone in your family has an account.
