Junky Monkeys come to Owairaka

Puriri Toru (Year 3) children had a visit from our friends at Junky Monkeys today. They had just a few rules (which we noticed were the same as our school values!), and then they gave us the freedom to play for over an hour!

Junky Monkeys exists to repurposing junk (a.k.a. Loose parts) into resources for creative play, and to promote a cultural shift towards reduce, reuse, recycle and a circular economy.

We had heaps of fun, and can't wait to see our own loose parts shed open soon on the school field!

Exciting events during Week 3

On Tuesday, Room 22 hosted an interesting Puriri Assembly. We had a special guest visitor, Jade's dad David, who taught us about what his job as a meteorologist involves.

On Friday, a special visit from the police Eagle helicopter got us all excited, and thinking about the role that these superheroes play in our community to keep us safe. Thanks to Ms Cramer and Mrs Romaniuk for organising this awesome experience.

Wheels Day - Friday!

Filming in Room 19!

Room 19 took part in a special filming project with the Auckland Council today. Keep a look out for these smiling faces in the media as we get closer to Matariki later in the term!

Caught Being Good - Jack and Bailee

We have had a great start to term two in Room 19. It is great to see everyone so engaged with their learning.

Jack and Bailee received Caught Being Good certificates at our Puriri Assembly this week. They have been focused in their reading and maths groups, and have been making some valuable contributions to our discussions.

Keep it up guys!

Room 19 POP Art

Lots of effort went into planning, making, and collating these awesome pop art names at the end of term one. They are currently on display in Room 19.

Road Safety Week

This week is Road Safety Week!  Here are some ways we can be road safety superheroes:

  • always use the school crossing

  • walk, bike or scooter to and from school

  • scooter at a safe speed and keep a look out for cars going in and out of driveways

  • wear a helmet when you are on your bike or scooter

  • be SAFE in cars - Seatbelts Are For Everyone!

Small things make a big difference - stay safe Owairaka!

Outrageous Oobleck

We spent time during Science WOW Week learning about states of matter - and how some matter can move between different states, depending on force applied to it. When you run your fingers slowly through cornstarch and water, it acts like a liquid, but apply rapid force, and it solidifies!

Science - Term Two

Term Two is Science time at Owairaka. During week one, we will be trying out some experiments designed to get us thinking like a scientist (predicting, observing, asking questions). For the rest of the term, we will be learning about sound, and how vibrations help us to hear everything around us.

Later in the term we will again be working with House of Science,  with a focus on physics.
