Race Relations Day - March 20

Race Relations day is always special at Owairaka. It is a chance for children to share a little about themselves and their family, and also to recognise and learn about the homelands and special places of other children. We celebrated with an assembly, and stunning parade of costumes in the morning. This was followed by a massive, diverse shared lunch between all the children at school. Thanks Mrs Kapisi for organising such an important day, and thanks children for your participation and respect for others. Mala was our class award winner, for her inclusiveness and care for all others in Room 6 and around the school, and for her great Sri Lankan costume. Wilson spoke to the school in Chinese Mandarin.

We went to MOTAT

Room Six (along with Rooms 21 and 25) visited MOTAT in Week 7. We have begun to explore the sea journeys undertaken by our Pacific ancestors, and it was a great opportunity to explore the materials that have been used in technology over the decades and how these have changed as knowledge has progressed. Children were fascinated by old Maori tools, made from wood, before iron came to New Zealand. Check out some of these photos from Jacob's mum...

Green Day March 6

Room 6 and Room 19 hosted the Green Day Assembly on Friday in Week 6. We celebrated our beautiful earth, and also raised awareness about all the ways we can take care of our small local area.

Kani was our award winner. He has taken a great interest in our school chickens, and has given lots of time and love to care for them. Well done Kani.
