Celebrating Matariki

Happy Matariki from Room 19. We have had an exciting week of learning. Our student teacher, Ms Haydn, has read us lots of stories about Matariki traditions. We have learnt lots of new facts.

We made our very own Korowai cloak, we all had to make feathers to help contribute to the cloak.

We had an AWESOME shared lunch with our buddy class, the amazing Room 23. Thank you so much to all the families who helped make our shared lunch a success.

We are really looking forward to Matariki next year - it is a special time of the year for all of us.

School Certificate: Diyani

Congratulations Diyani - you were the certificate winner at our special Matariki school assembly this week. You always have great manners with your classmates and teachers, and you are great at sharing your sense of humour with us too!

Thanks for being a great classmate and friend to others!

Celebrating Matariki

This year, Matariki begins on June 15. Owairaka will be recognising the Maori New Year through weeks 7/8 of this term.

Room 19 has lots of exciting learning planned, keep an eye on our blog for some of it!

As part of our celebrations, we will be getting together with our buddy class (Room 23) to share lunch. This will happen on Thursday 21st. Instead of a normal lunchbox on that day, could Room 19 families please bring a small plate of finger food to share with classmates and buddies.

Happy Matariki from Room 19.

Puriri Cross Country

Thursday this week was our annual Cross Country Day. Puriri team has been training hard to build up our running stamina, and it was awesome to see everyone give the run a go on the big day!

Some of us wanted to win, and some of us wanted to get to the finish line. Well done Room 19, you are all deserving of your orange participant certificates.

Special well done to Libby (2nd place), and Antonio (3rd place), who will be going to represent Owairaka School in a couple of weeks.

The Turtle and the Plastic Bag

Thank you to the Creative Souls Project, who performed their new play for our school during Green Week. It was called "The Turtle and the Plastic Bag", and it shared an important message about plastic waste and our oceans.

You can check out some of the awesome work the Creative Souls are doing by following this link.

School Certificate: Khaalid

Wow! This might be the first time someone in Room 19 has received TWO certificates at school. Well done Khaalid, you have shown Manawanuitanga by being more responsible for your own learning, and Kaitiakitanga by looking after your learning books and tools.

You have also completed Lexia level 6. Nice one! Keep up your great work.

This week, we have been recognising and celebrating Samoan Language Week. We have a lot of Samoan children and families at Owairaka, and we have really enjoyed singing, and learning new greetings.

Have a look at some of the greetings we have learnt here.
