Hens on Holiday
Thanks to the super Ms Johns (our lovely ESOL specialist at Owairaka) who has very kindly offered her home to our four school chickens over the Christmas holiday.
Room 6 can't wait to have our girls back in school next year.

Caught Being Good: Taito and Ava
Well done on a great year to these two.
Taito always has excellent manners, and lately has made great improvements with maths, especially with remembering times tables.
Ava gets her award for being a helpful and supportive classmate (and friend) to everyone she works with.

Caught Being Good: Farhan and Lucas
Farhan - super listening in class this term. We know you are listening because you can respond to questions with your thoughts and answers.
Well done Lucas for an excellent two years. You have great manners every morning and are thoughtful in learning time!

Terrific Tiffany!
We have been reading the "Big Friendly Giant" by Roald Dahl in class. Tiffany shows she is an excellent listener by looking for interesting similes, and making great predictions about what might happen in the rest of the story!
She was also an enthusiastic performer in the Niuean Cultural group.
Nice one Tiffany, a super role model for the rest of us!

Eden Albert Culture Festival 2016
What an amazing festival!
We are all very proud of the ten groups who performed at the Eden/Albert Cultural Festival on Saturday 26 November.
The groups who performed were: African, Hawaiian, Indian, Irish, Japanese, Kapa Haka, Niuean, Samoan, Scottish and Tongan.
A huge thank you to all of the children, staff and families that made this day such a success.
Awesome Owairaka, awesome!
Room 6 builds a bug hotel
As a follow up to our planting and gardening in our community in 2016, Room 6 decided to build a "bug hotel" at Owairaka Park, as a habitat for creepy crawlies and pollinators to live in.
Thanks to the awesome and creative Heather Lyall for guiding us through this project, Room 6 you worked extremely hard to get this project done in one and a half hours!
We look forward to working with you again in 2017 Heather.

Caught Being Good: Questyn and Casey
Congratulations Questyn for your persistence and effort to give the Scottish Cultural group a go! You were amazing on stage at the weekend.
Casey, Room 6 has noticed your excellent attitude to school this term - you have given thought and enthusiasm to all activities in class, and you had a HUGE smile on stage with the Niuean Cultural group.
Room 6's super star athlete
Room Six is super proud of Casey... she represented Owairaka at the Eden Albert Athletics day last week.
Casey was in the long jump, 100m and 200m running races, and she also ran in the 8 year old girls relay.
Some of our seven year olds can't wait til next year, when they will be old enough to race and compete for our school as well!!

Caught Being Good - Eli and Ronan
These super boys have had a great term four.
Eli has been focused when learning to write a narrative about a character who perseveres. Really interesting to read!
Ronan has continued to use excellent manners, AND he can use a number line to help count backwards.
Keep it up for the rest of 2016 boys.

Green Day Certificate - Joyce
Room 6 had a great Green Day in term four - we spent the morning taking extra special care of our school chickens.
We cleaned and tidied their coop, gave them lots of fresh greens to eat, and even let them have an extra long walk around the gardens.
Well done Joyce for winning our Green Day certificate - you helped raise awareness about our environment by dressing totally in green!
You can read more about the day at

Fair Play Awards
Caught being good - Bruno and Lorenzo were spotted competing hard at the Puriri Athletics last week, while also showing an awesome sense of "fair play" when supporting their classmates.
Excellent example to set for others boys, well done.
Garden to Table - and our special visitor!
Last Wednesday was a very special Garden to Table. We had a guest chef to help us prepare what may have been our most delicious menu yet!
Many thanks to Jasper's dad, Merouane, who taught us how to make both savoury and sweet crepes.
It is always great to have families from Room 6 come along to these special lessons. If you are keen to volunteer, we have two lessons to come in 2016, on Wednesday 16th and 30th, both at 11.15am.
School Assembly - Victor and Joyce!
Well done Joyce - caught being friendly and helping others in the playground by our Kauri Team peer mediators.
Victor - you have perservered through 2016 with an awesome "Growth Mindset" attitude to learning. You don't mind a challenge, and are great at encouraging others to keep on trying!

Room 6's special visitor!
We were lucky to be part of a television filming opportunity during week 2. Nigel Latta and crew are preparing a new show for TVNZ, all about financial literacy. Room 6 tried to understand what a commodity market is all about (how can half a sheep be equal to two chickens?). Don't worry, our job was to look confused!
Keep an eye out for some familiar faces on television in 2017.
Room 6 - a class full of readers!
Room 6 - congratulations again on your reading efforts during the last school holidays - you made sure that your reading skills kept on improving even while you weren't at school.
Your parents and teacher are very proud of your efforts!
Caught Being Good: Fila and Ebony
Congratulations Fila - you have learnt to use a number line to help with addition and subtraction.
Thank you Ebony - you have been a super role model with your leadership in caring for our school chickens, which can sometimes be a yucky job!
Puriri Outdoor Education 2016
WOW - what an awesome two days had by Puriri team during week 3 of term 4. We made the most of the quiet school grounds, with Kauri team at camp, and we all got to try heaps of different, challenging activities. These included:
- orienteering
- tent pitching
- kite building
- camping skills (fires, rope tying)
- pizza cooking
- confidence course
Thanks to the awesome Puriri teachers and the tireless Ms Whysall for organising such a fun learning experience.

Room 6 Garden to Table
At Garden to Table this week, Ms Best put half the class through their "knife license" paces to see if their knife skills were safe. The rest of Room 6 will get their chance in Week 4.
We didn't let the lack of a school kitchen get in the way of a good meal, so for lunch we had delicious spring rolls from Vietnam.
Thanks Ms Best, see you again soon!
Certificate Winners - Taito and Questyn!
Questyn and Taito were given certificates at school assembly recently. Questyn ate 400 apples over the holidays to earn more sports gear for our school, WOW!!!
Taito has been super thoughtful in writing class, and shared lots of excellent ideas when we were learning to write about "a moment in time".
Great effort in school boys, keep it up!

Congratulations Sinan
Well done Sinan, you were our certificate winner at Green Week Assembly.
Sinan is a super role model for our Year 2 buddy class when we do yoga together. Sinan is patient and relaxed in yoga, and he works to make his legs and core strong by holding poses for an extra long time.
Remember, just because we aren't huffing and puffing, doesn't mean our bodies aren't working really hard.

Monday 5 September
Monday 5 September was a different day. Lots of teachers went to a union meeting, to share their opinions on government education policy. It is very important that teachers have a chance to voice their opinions on important changes to education in New Zealand.
Mr Lyons and Room 6 only had six children stay for the whole day!
Here is a photo of us in our very quiet afternoon classroom.
Happy Green Week from Room 6!
We had a great time working with our Room 22 buddy class and Mrs O'Shea making paper mache globes last week!

Puriri Award Winners - Brandon and Mozart
Please read the post below for information about our amazing Puriri Production!
Two Room 6 boys who played a confident and energetic role in the play were Mozart and Brandon. These boys were dancers, who had to do BOTH dancing and changing props on stage at the same time.
You were a very important part of the show, well done boys!
Puriri Play - ABANDONED!
A super congratulations to all of our Puriri children who took part in our term three production, called "Abandoned".

- dancers
- actors
- filming crew
- promotions team
- art and props team
- costume team
- directors
The play was awesome because every child chose their own role, and worked together with teammates to contribute to a successful two performances on Wednesday 7th.
